Fourth-Ranked Amherst Pulls Away in Second Half to Beat Polar Bears

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Aaron Toomey and David Waller combined for 45 points to lead the fourth-ranked Amherst College men's basketball team to an 80-66 win at Bowdoin on Friday evening.

The Jeffs rebound from their first loss of the season to improve to 14-2 (4-0 NESCAC). The Polar Bears fell for the third time in their last four outings and dip to 10-5 (1-3 NESCAC).

Toomey led all players with 23 points and 10 assists while Waller pitched in 22 points for the Jeffs. Will Hanley had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Bowdoin while Ryan O'Connell notched 14 points thanks to four three-pointers.

In a back-and-forth opening period, the teams traded the lead six times and were tied on four occasions. A pair of lay-ins by Aaron Toomey pushed the Amherst lead to four points late in the period, but a Will Hanley hoop trimmed the Jeffs' lead to 36-34 heading into halftime.

The Polar Bears took a quick four-point lead out of the break, but consecutive three-pointers by Taylor Barrise and Waller regained the lead for Amherst. The Jeffs pushed their lead to seven points midway through the period but could not deliver the knockout blow until late in regulation when Waller capped a 6-0 spurt with a three-pointer from the top of the key that gave the visitors an 11-point lead with 3:14 to play.

The Jeffs hit 10 three-pointers in the game, led by four from Waller. Amherst connected on 54.7% of its shots while Bowdoin buried 44.4% in the game.
