Gould Creeps Closer to Goal Record as Bowdoin Wins Season Debut

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Ellery Gould scored a pair of goals as the Bowdoin College women's soccer team defeated the University of Southern Maine 3-0 in its season debut on Thursday afternoon at Pickard Field. The Polar Bears (1-0-0) improve to 26-0-1 all-time against the Huskies, who fall to 0-3-0 on the campaign.

With her two goals, Gould crept closer to the school's career goal-scoring record. The senior tri-captain moved into sole possession of fifth place in program history with 34 career tallies. She sits four shy of the record of 38 held by Marte Holden '85.

After controlling the pace of play in the early going, but seeing several offerings slip high and wide of the cage, Bowdoin was able to dent the scoring column as first-year Kaley Nelson knocked home a rebound off the post at 26:01 for her first collegiate score. Gould doubled Bowdoin's lead before intermission off a feed from rookie Alexa Yurick, notching her first goal of the season at 41:14. Gould capped the scoring on the nicest play of the afternoon at 56:57, heading home a picturesque cross from Casey Blossom to give the Polar Bears a three-goal edge.

Bowdoin's Louise Johnson made three saves for a shutout in her first career start. Kat Rothe stopped 12 shots in defeat for the Huskies.
