Polar Bears Continue Recent Dominance of Colby in NESCAC Opener

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's volleyball team won its 12th consecutive meeting with rival Colby, 3-1 (25-16, 16-25, 25-14, 25-17) on Friday evening at Morrell Gymnasium in the opening match of the New England Small College Athletic Conference season.

The Polar Bears improve to 5-1 (1-0 NESCAC) while the Mules fall to 3-1 (0-1 NESCAC). Bowdoin is ranked fourth in the latest New England poll.

Kristin Hanczor continued her torrid play to start the season, earning 13 kills and four blocks while Tory Edelman posted 11 kills with no errors, connecting at a .579 percentage for the match. Sophia Cornew had 33 assists and 20 digs for the Polar Bears, who had 10 aces as a team in the win.

Colby was paced by 11 kills from Mackie Sewell and eight kills from Caitlin Burchill. Kate Pleasants had 27 assists while Emily Varni led the Mules with 14 digs.

The Polar Bears have not lost to the Mules since October of 2005 and Bowdoin head coach Karen Corey improved to 12-0 all-time against Colby. With the victory, Bowdoin also extended its home winning streak to 24 consecutive matches dating back to October of 2007.
