Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine - Jill Henrikson and Ellery Gould combined for 40 points as the Bowdoin College women's basketball team used a strong second half to take a 66-60 win over Bates on Thursday evening at Morrell Gymnasium.
In the 81st meeting all-time between the squads, the Polar Bears improve to 5-2 while the Bobcats see their five-game win streak halted as they fall to 5-2. Bowdoin holds a 59-22 edge in the all-time series.
Henrikson netted 22 points on 7-11 shooting from the field while Gould buried four three-pointers and ended with 18. Kaitlin Donahoe scored 13 points and dished out six assists for Bowdoin. Bates got 13 from Allie Beaulieu and 11 from Annie Burns, who also grabbed seven rebounds. Meredith Kelly pitched in 12 points and six boards off the bench for the Bobcats.
Both teams struggled offensively in the early going, but Bates was able to muster an 8-1 run to take a 26-19 edge after a Taryn O'Connell lay-in with just two minutes remaining in the period. Bowdoin came alive behind a pair of Gould trifectas and tied the game on a long-distance shot by Gould, 26-26 just before intermission.
The Polar Bears jumped out of the gate with a 9-2 run to start the second period, capped by another Gould three-pointer. Bates was able to trim the lead to three points moments later, but that would be as close as the Bobcats could get. Bowdoin used another 9-2 surge to up its lead to 44-34 with 14 minutes to go. The Polar Bears continued to build their edge, increasing their advantage to as many as 17 points with five minutes remaining. Bates hit a pair of three-pointers in the final moments to close the final gap to six points.
Bowdoin held a 35-32 edge on the glass for the game and, after shooting 35% in the opening period, hit on 51% of its shots in the second frame.
