Polar Bears Survive Engineers in Overtime to Claim Tip-Off Tournament Crown

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team survived RPI, 65-61 in overtime, to claim the 2011 Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament Presented by the Inn at Brunswick Station Saturday at Morrell Gymnasium.

The 11th-ranked Polar Bears improve to 2-0 with the win while the Engineers fall to 1-2. Bowdoin's Jill Henrikson was named to the All-Tournament team along with teammate Kaitlin Donahoe, RPI's Sarah Wetmore, Plymouth State's Sam Monohon and Eastern Nazarene's Alexis Malloy. Plymouth State defeated Eastern Nazarene 58-48 in the consolation game.

RPI held the lead for the majority of Saturday's title match, but could never pull away from the Polar Bears. The Engineers' biggest lead came with 6:47 remaining after Lauren Hayes nailed a three-pointer to give the visitors a 53-48 edge. Bowdoin locked down the Engineers on defense and mounted a 6-0 surge over the ensuing three minutes, taking its first lead of the half on a pair of Henrikson free throws with 2:51 to go, 54-53.

A jumper by Hayes regained the lead for RPI, 55-54 on the next possession, but Ellery Gould's hoop-and-harm lay-in with a minute to play gave Bowdoin a 57-55 edge. Jen Rock knotted it with a jumper for RPI, but Amy Hackett regained the lead with a spinning lay-in with just 20 seconds left, 59-57. With seconds ticking down, Sarah Wetmore drove the lane and rattled home an eight-footer to send the game into overtime.

Bowdoin scored the first four points of the overtime session and held RPI to just 1-6 from the field in the extra session to clinch the win. The Polar Bears were led by 19 points apiece from Henrikson and Donahoe. Donahoe also pitched in five assists and five rebounds while Henrikson added five rebounds and two steals. Alex Barry also saw double figures with 10 points and nine boards. RPI featued four players in double digits led by 14 from Jen Rock and a dozen points apiece from Hillary McKinley and Wetmore, who added 13 rebounds. Hayes had 11 points and five boards for the Engineers.

Bowdoin held a 47-41 edge on the glass and, despite connecting on just 28.6% from the field, hit 25-34 free throws. RPI shot 41% from the field but attempted just 13 free throws, hitting nine.


BRUNSWICK, Maine – Juniors Colleen O'Hara and Sam Monohon combined for 30 points and 16 rebounds Saturday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University women's basketball team to a 58-48 victory over Eastern Nazarene College in the consolation game of the Bowdoin Tip-Off Tournament presented by the Inn at Brunswick Station.

Monohon was named to the All-Tournament team for Plymouth State while Alexis Malloy was chosen from Eastern Nazarene.

O'Hara scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds, making 7-of-10 shots from the field and 3-of-6 from three-point range, while Monohon scored 13 points and collected a team-high nine boards.  PSU rebounded from a lopsided loss to Bowdoin in Friday's opening round to pick up its first win of the season (1-2).

Leading 29-28 at halftime, PSU came out of the locker room and took control, outscoring the Lions 18-6 over the first eight minutes.  O'Hara hit a pair of three-pointers in the rally and junior Katie Seraikas made one.  The Panthers maintained the double-digit margin most of the rest of the way, with ENC getting no closer than eight points.
