Bowdoin's Historic Season Ends in Second Round NCAA Loss to UMass Boston

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The most successful season in Bowdoin volleyball history came to an end in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday as the Polar Bears dropped a 3-2 decision to UMass-Boston (23-25, 25-15, 17-25, 25-18, 15-7).

The Polar Bears conclude their unprecedented season with a record of 27-3, setting a school record for wins (27-0), a perfect NESCAC regular season (10-0), as well as the program's first-ever NESCAC Championship, NCAA Tournament bid and NCAA Tournament victory.

Bowdoin held a 2-1 lead after three sets, but the Beacons stormed back to take the fourth and jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the decisive fifth set that the Polar Bears could not overcome.

Melissa Haskell had 13 kills and 12 digs to lead Bowdoin. Ellie Brennan had 12 kills while Kristin Hanczor (nine kills, three blocks) and Tory Edelman (seven kills, four blocks) also proved tough in defeat. Sophia Cornew had 43 assists and 19 digs while Taylor Vail tallied a team-high 25 digs for Bowdoin.

Shannon Thompson led the Beacons with a match-high 21 kills, 15 digs and four blocks. Cassy Hanneman had 48 assists while Kayla Wilson notched 25 digs.
