Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine - Katie Herter notched two goals and an assist to en route to a 3-0 Bowdoin field hockey win over Colby College on Saturday afternoon at Ryan Field. The win improves the second-ranked Polar Bears to 8-0 (6-0 NESCAC) on the year, while the Mules drop to 1-7 (0-6 NESCAC) with the loss.
Herter put Bowdoin on the board at 28:31 in the first half after an Ella Curren corner attempt. Cathleen Smith tipped Curren's rocket, but Colby goalie Michelle Burt made a good save of the shot. Herter roofed the rebound into the top of the net to put the Polar Bears on top. The goal proved to be the only marker of the half, as Burt made saves on back-to-back attempts by Liz Clegg and Herter to keep the Mules within one.
Katie Riley gave the Polar Bears an insurance goal with 12:29 remaining on a tip off of a Herter shot. Shortly after Riley's tally, Herter struck again to put the game away. Clegg carried the ball up the right side of the field and directed a hard pass to a waiting Smith at the top of the circle. Smith swiftly one-touched the ball to Herter on the back post, who slammed home her second goal of the game.
Colby goalie Michelle Burt made 16 saves for the Mules. Kayla Lessard was called on to make one save to earn her third shutout of the season. The Polar Bears received eight penalty corners while the defense held Colby to one shot and zero corner attempts all game.
The Polar Bears will face the University of Maine-Farmington in non-conference play at home on Wednesday, October 12th at 6:00pm. Colby will return to action at Husson on Tuesday evening.
