Box Score LEWISTON, Maine - Ella Curren scored a hat trick as the Bowdoin College field hockey team defeated Bates for the 27th consecutive time, 5-0, on Wednesday evening at Campus Avenue Field. The second-ranked Polar Bears remain unbeaten at 7-0 (5-0 NESCAC) this season while the Bobcats fall to 2-6 (1-4 NESCAC).
All three of Curren's goals came on penalty corners to double her season total. She opened the scoring in the 19th minute after the insertion by Elizabeth Clegg and the stop by Kassey Matoin as Bowdoin carried a one-goal lead into intermission despite a 20-1 edge in shots.
Curren made it a two-goal game in the fifth minute of the second half, on another insertion by Clegg. Clegg scored the first field goal of the game five minutes later with an assist from Cathleen Smith for a 3-0 lead. With 23:50 left in the game, Katie Herter found driving space along the right wing of Bates' circle, and she sliced a shot between Otley and the near post for her third goal of the season. Cullen made it 5-0 wiht 9:26 to go on a penalty corner, set up by Katie Riley.
Bowdoin held a 46-4 edge in shots for the contest as Kayla Lessard stopped one shot in the shutout for the Polar Bears. Otley made 13 saves for the Bobcats, who have not beaten the Polar Bears since 1984.
