Bowdoin Field Hockey Steamrolls Hamilton in Six-Goal Win

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Cathleen Smith scored two goals to lead the third-ranked Bowdoin College field hockey team in a shutout win over Hamilton on Saturday afternoon. The victory improves the Polar Bears unbeaten record of 10-0 (7-0 NESCAC) while the Continentals fall to 5-5 (3-4 NESCAC).

Smith opened the scoring with a one-timer off a pass from Liz Clegg at the 16:15 mark of the first half. Clegg raced down the field to keep the ball in play, gained the end line, and dished it to Smith in the middle of the circle for the finish. With 4:54 left in Liz Clegg the half, Emily French picked up a blocked corner attempt and ripped a shot on net that Hamilton goaltender Victoria Trentini turned aside, but Smith put home the rebound for her second goal of the game to give the hosts a two goal lead at intermission.

In the second half, Bowdoin scored three times in a span of 2:10 to secure the win. Ella Curren opened the spree with a rip to the near-side post on a penalty corner inserted by McKenna Teague at 18:43. Clegg continued the scoring at 16:59 by finishing off a Katie Herter pass at close range. Just 27 seconds later, Katie Riley rifled a nifty shot from the middle of the circle at 16:32. First-year Pam Herter wrapped up the scoring by tipping a Kassey Matoin shot into the back of the net with :13 left in the game.

Bowdoin controlled the pace of play throughout the game, owning a 45-0 edge in shots and a 20-0 advantage in penalty corners. Hamilton was held without a shot for the first time this season. Kayla Lessard (61:19) and Hannah Gartner (8:43) shared netminding responsibilities for the Polar Bears. Trentini finished with 33 saves throughout the contest that included a number of point blank shots and rebounds.

The Polar Bears return to action tomorrow in a nationally ranked battle against eighth-ranked Amherst College at 12pm. Hamilton will face Colby in Waterville tomorrow at 12pm.
