BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Tufts University women's basketball team snapped Bowdoin's 14-game winnning streak in a 62-49 victory at Morrell Gymnasium on Friday evening. The Jumbos improve to 12-2 (2-1 NESCAC) by dealing Bowdoin (14-2, 1-1 NESCAC) its first home loss
of the campaign.
Colleen Hart spearheaded the Jumbos' attack, posting a game-high 18 points, including 4-4 from three-point range. Collier Clegg pitched in 14 points off the bench while Tiffany Kornegay added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Liz Moynihan (13 points) also saw double figures for Tufts. Bowdoin was led by 17 points from Jill Henrikson and 13 points with 10 rebounds from Nicole Coombes.
Tufts held Bowdoin without a field goal for the first ten minutes of Friday's contest, but the Polar Bears were able to stay close thanks to a pair of Henrikson three-pointers, 27-21, at halftime. Bowdoin came out firing in the second half, using an 11-2 spurt to take their first lead of the game on a pair of Amy Hackett free throws, 32-31, with 13:30 to go.
A 6-0 surge regained the lead for Tufts, and Hart nailed a pair of trifectas on consecutive possessions to quickly push the Jumbos' lead to nine points, 45-36, with eight minutes remaining. The Polar Bears could get no closer than six points for the remainder of the contest as Tufts padded their lead by hitting 13 free throws in the late going to seal the victory.
Tufts connected on 44.9% of their shots for the game, including 52.6% in the second half, while holding Bowdoin to just 34.7% for the contest.
