LEWISTON, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's soccer team remained
unbeaten and extended their shutout string to four-straight games
after a scoreless draw against Bates on Saturday afternoon. The
Polar Bears stand at 1-0-2 (0-0-2 NESCAC) this season while the
Bobcats move to 1-1-1 (0-1-1 NESCAC).
The tie breaks a seven-year losing skid for the Bobcats against
the Polar Bears and is the first deadlock between the teams since
2002. With 110 more scoreless minutes, Bowdoin netminder Dan Hicks
made three saves to extend his personal shutout minute streak to
442:41, dating back to the end of last season.
Both teams created some excellent scoring opportunities but
couldn't cash them in, although Bowdoin outshot Bates by a 35-10
margin. Late in the second half, a cross by Tyler Dewdney from the
right wing was one-timed by John Murphy toward the Bowdoin net, but
caught by Hicks. About a minute later, on the other end of the
field, a laser shot by Ben Denton-Schneider was deflected out of
bounds with a diving stab by Watts.
During the first 10-minute overtime period, Bowdoin had a sequence
of three highly threatening shots in a row. The first, by
first-year Alex Marecki, was blocked by a lunging defender. Michael Gale fired a hard shot that hit the crossbar, and Alex Thomas's
follow also hit the crossbar before Bates could clear the ball
away.
