BRUNSWICK, Maine - The 11th-ranked Bowdoin College field hockey
team defeated Wellesley College 6-0 in a battle of unbeatens at
Ryan Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Polar Bears improve to 2-0
this season while the Blue fall to 2-1.
After several sparkling saves by Wellesley netminder Sarina Sawyer
in the opening minutes, Bowdoin finally broke through courtesy of
Katie Herter, who scored the first of her two goals at 15:19.
Cathleen Smith tipped home an Ella Curren slap shot from the left
wing at 27:08 to give the hosts a two-goal lead at
intermission.
The floodgates opened for Bowdoin in the second period as
Elizabeth Clegg received a pass from Emily French and stick-handled
around defenders to bury her third goal of the season at 39:56.
Herter notched her second of the day, and fourth of the year, at
56:51 before Jessie Small added a pair of late scores to round out
the win.
Sawyer made 21 saves in the defeat for Wellesley, who lost their
seventh-straight to Bowdoin. Kayla Lessard was tested with just one
save in the cage for Bowdoin.
