BIDDEFORD, Maine - Junior Will Hanley scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Bowdoin College men's basketball team to an 80-39 non-conference win over the University of New England Tuesday evening at the Campus Center.
Hanley poured in 12 points over the opening 9:51 to help the Polar Bears establish a 20-11 advantage. He would finish the half 7 of 10 from the floor and 2 of 2 from the line to register 16 points as the visitors headed to the locker room with a 40-17 advantage.
The Polar Bears continued to pull away in the second half on their way to upping their record to 3-0. No Bowdoin starter played more than 22 minutes, while 11 players reached double-digits in minutes played. Junior Ryan O'Connell contributed 12 points and classmate Tom Carter 10. Senior captain Randy DeFeo had a solid all-around game with eight rebounds and eight assists. Junior guard Travis Guerrette scored a career-high 16 points to pace the UNE offense.
Bowdoin utilized a height advantage inside to dominate the boards (54-22) and convert 48 points in the paint, including 15 second-chance points. The Polar Bears shot 52.3 percent (34 of 65) from the field, compared to 28.1 percent (16 of 57) for the home team. Bowdoin has a week layoff before hosting the University of Southern Maine next Tuesday at Morrell Gymnasium (7:30 p.m.).
