NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Bowdoin College women's volleyball team
earned an impressive second-place showing at the Hall of Fame
Tournament hosted by Smith and Mount Holoyoke on Saturday. After
finishing tenth in the same tournament a year ago, Bowdoin reached
the championship match and improved to 16-9 this season.
The Polar Bears battled a pair of NESCAC foes on Saturday,
defeating Amherst, the conference's first-place team, in four sets
(25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 28-26) and then dropped to Middlebury for the
third time this season, 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-20).
After posting 13 kills against Springfield on Friday, Kristin
Hanczor added 13 more, against just two errors, with three blocks
in the win over Amherst and added six blocks, with two kills, in
the Middlebury match to earn All-Tournament honors.
Other strong performers on Saturday included Melissa Haskell, who
notched 11 kills, 16 digs and four blocks against Amherst and
Hillary Cederna, who collected a dozen kills against the Jeffs.
Sophia Cornew had 42 assists and 10 digs in the win. Against
Middlebury, Haskell had six kills and four blocks while Taylor Vail
had a team-high 15 digs.
Bowdoin will next play at Endicott on Tuesday evening at 7:00
p.m.
