BRUNSWICK, Maine - The 14th-ranked Bowdoin College men's soccer
team scored a pair of second-half goals to defeat Trinity, 2-0, on
Saturday and secure a NESCAC Quarterfinal home contest. The Polar
Bears (9-1-2, 5-1-2 NESCAC) have won eight-straight and still have
a shot of earning the conference's top seed for the playoffs that
begin on Sunday, October 31. The Bantams fall to 6-6-1 (2-5-1
NESCAC) with the loss.
After a scoreless first period, Bowdoin's Michael Gale came off the
bench to tally the game's first goal early in the second half. Call Nichols chipped a
long pass ahead to Gale, who ran onto the ball on a breakaway down
the right wing. Gale fired a shot to the lower corner to give
Bowdoin a 1-0 lead at 50:05. The Polar Bears then sealed the win
with five minutes to go when Eddie Jones broke loose
behind the Trinity defense and booted a shot that was tipped by
Bantam goaltender Grant Schonberg and trickled over the goal line
to make it a two-goal game.
Will
Wise collected two saves in the win for Bowdoin while Schonberg
made three saves for Trinity. With the victory, Bowdoin has earned
enough points (17) to be assured of at least a quarterfinal home
match, regardless of their regular season-ending result at Tufts on
Friday night. Bowdoin still has an outside shot at the top seed,
depending greatly on the result of Friday's Williams-Middlebury
match. To clinch a postseason bid, Trinity must win at Amherst on
Friday.
Bowdoin will return to action on Sunday when they host
Colby-Sawyer at 2:00 p.m.
