NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Bowdoin College women's volleyball team
defeated Springfield College, 3-2, to advance in the Gold Bracket
of the 2010 Hall of Fame Tournament hosted by Smith and Mount
Holyoke College this weekend. The sixth-seeded Polar Bears improve
to 15-8 with the win over the third-seeded Pride, who were ranked
second in the latest New England poll.
In the lone upset of the day at the 16-team tournament, Bowdoin
and Springfield split the first four sets before the Polar Bears
claimed the fifth in thrilling fashion. The Polar Bears won by game
scores of 21-25, 25-20, 25-19, 21-25, 18-16.
Hillary Cederna
registered 17 kills to lead the Polar Bears, who excelled
defensively with 16 blocks as a team. Kristin Hanczor had four
blocks to go with 13 kills while Sophia
Cornew had 47 assists, three aces and 14 digs. Anna Noucas and Jillian Berkman also had
three aces apiece for Bowdoin.
The Polar Bears advance to the semifinals where they will face
Amherst at noon Saturday at Smith College. Bowdoin will look to
avenge a 3-0 setback to Amherst on October 9.
