MEDFORD, Mass. - The Tufts University women's basketball team
outscored Bowdoin 34-19 in the second half en route to their second
straight victory over a Top 25 team, 52-40, in NESCAC women's
basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Cousens Gymnasium. The
16th-ranked Jumbos are now 3-1 in the NESCAC and 15-2 overall. The
13th-ranked Polar Bears fall to 1-2 in conference and 13-3
overall.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half as each shot
under 30 percent. Bowdoin entered the half holding a 21-18
advantage.
Senior Julia Baily scored the first four buckets of the second half
for the Jumbos a she piled up a game-high 16 points, including 10
in the second half. The Jumbos would slowly push away from the
Polar Bears and took the lead for good at the 9:30 mark on a
three-pointer by sophomore Kate Barnosky.
Barnosky finished with 11 points including three three-point field
goals. Baily added a team-high nine rebounds and junior Sarah Nolet
contributed four points and six rebounds off the bench.
Bowdoin did not have a single player finish in double-digit
scoring. Senior Leah Rubega tallied eight points with a game-high
12 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. Sophomore Ellery
Gould scored a team-high nine points off the bench
for the Polar Bears.
Tufts, which defeated #25 Colby 72-57 on Friday night, shot 54.5
percent (12/22) in the second half and finished at 37.3 percent
(19/51). The hosts turned the ball over just eight times. Bowdoin
struggled from three-point range, going just two for 12.
Tufts returns to action on Tuesday night in a non-conference game
against Emerson set for a 7 pm tip at Cousens Gymnasium. The Polar
Bears are also next in action on Tuesday at Maine Maritime for a
6:00 pm start.
