LEWISTON, Maine - Propelled by a stifling defensive performance,
the Bowdoin College women's basketball team cruised to a 63-42
victory over Bates on Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium. The
13th-ranked Polar Bears improve to 13-2 (1-1 NESCAC) this season
while the Bobcats fall to 9-9 (0-3 NESCAC) after losing to Bowdoin
for the second time this season.
Bowdoin received a game-high 17 points by Caitlin Hynes and 11
points from Katie Bergeron. Hynes scored 13 points in the second
half as the Polar Bears shot 58.3 percent from the field in the
second half to pull away. Ellery Gould grabbed a team-high seven
rebounds, helping Bowdoin to a 40-28 edge on the boards.
Lauren Dobish and Lauren Yanofsky scored 11 points apiece to lead
the Bobcats, with all of Dobish's scoring coming in the second
half. Yanofsky added a team-high seven rebounds. Annie Burns was
held scoreless, but dished out a game-high seven assists and
grabbed five rebounds.
Bates hit just 1 of 19 three-point attempts, including 0-for-10 in
the second half, foiling its attempts to get back into the
game.
Both teams started out the game cold, particularly the Bobcats,
who shot 5-for-20 (25%) from the field in the first half, including
1-for-9 behind the three-point arc, while the Polar Bears managed
an 11-for-29 (.379) effort. Bowdoin jumped out to a 20-7 lead in
the first 11 minutes of the game. As Bates turned ice cold, Gould
hit a three-pointer with 3:04 left in the half to extend the lead
to 25-10. Bates closed the gap to 25-14 at intermission.
Hynes and Gould hit back-to-back threes to open the second half as
Bowdoin reasserted control with a 31-14 lead with 17:29 left. With
Bates continuing to struggle offensively, the lead opened up to
41-20 on a layup by Kaitlin Donahoe with 11:56 left.
Bowdoin will travel to play at Tufts on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
