BRUNSWICK, Maine - The 13th-ranked Bowdoin College field hockey
team scored three times in each period and cruised to a 6-0 victory
over Husson College on Tuesday evening at Ryan Field. The Polar
Bears improve to 4-2 while the Eagles dropped to 1-3 with the
loss.
A three-goal flurry midway through the first half broke a
scoreless tie and put the Polar Bears on top for good. Shavonne
Lord got things going for the hosts, stripping a defender of the
ball, walking into the circle and cracking a drive inside the left
post at 16:03 to give Bowdoin the lead. Less than two minutes
later, Jessie Small put home a rebound to make it 2-0 and followed
it up with a deflection off an Elizabeth Clegg drive to give the
Polar Bears a three-goal lead at intermission.
The second half was more of the same, as the Polar Bears scored
twice in 30 seconds. Kara Kelley ripped a shot from the top left
side of the circle at 48:51 before Clegg beat her defender and
backhanded a nifty shot into the cage at 49:21. Cathleen Smith
rounded out the scoring with a goal at 68:24 for Bowdoin.
Husson's Kristen Capen stopped 13 shots in the loss while Emily
Neilson (one save) and Kayla Lessard (zero saves) shared the
shutout for the Polar Bears. Bowdoin out-shot Husson 36-1 and held
an 18-1 edge in penalty corners. The Polar Bears own a 7-0-0 record
all-time against the Eagles.
