SCORE
BRUNSWICK, Maine - Kat Flaherty posted her first career shutout
and Ellery Gould scored twice as the Bowdoin College women's soccer
team earned their first victory of 2009, blanking Bates by a score
of 4-0 on Tuesday afternoon. The Polar Bears improve to 1-1 (1-1
NESCAC) on the year while the Bobcats fall to 1-1 (1-1 NESCAC).
The teams traded great chances in the early going, as Bates' Tina
Tobin broke free behind the Bowdoin defense just ten minutes into
the game, but missed an open net as her chance trickled wide of the
net. Bowdoin responded with a great feed from Dana Riker to Amy
Hackett, who ripped a shot that forced a diving stop by Bobcat
netminder Annie Burns to keep the game scoreless.
Ten minutes later, Bowdoin first-year Stacie Sammott came off the
bench to spark the Polar Bear offense. Sammott found Celeste Swain
with a centering feed into the box that Swain one-touched past
Burns to give Bowdoin a one-goal lead that they carried into
intermission.
The Polar Bears exploded for three second-half goals, the first
coming shortly after the break. Gould carried the ball down the
right wing, cut to the center and left-footed a shot that tucked
inside the post at 47:52 to make it 2-0. With 17 minutes to go,
Sammott broke free on Burns, ripped an initial shot that was saved,
but pounced on the rebound to find Hackett in front. Hackett tapped
the ball into the net to give Bowdoin a 3-0 lead. Gould added a
second tally with less than nine minutes to go, finishing off a
loose ball in front to close out the scoring.
Kat Flaherty stopped eight shots in the first blank sheet of her
career. Burns ended with 12 saves as Bowdoin out-shot Bates 25-15
in the contest.
