WELLESLEY, Mass. - Bowdoin College sophomore Katie Herter collected
a hat trick as the seventh-ranked Polar Bear field hockey team
dismantled Wellesley, 7-0 on Tuesday evening. The defending
national champions rebound from their season-opening loss at
Amherst to improve to 1-1 this season. The Blue fall to 2-1 on the
year.
Despite a quick onslaught of shots from Bowdoin to start the game,
Wellesley keeper Sarina Sawyer picked up seven saves in the first
10 minutes of play to keep the game scoreless. Bowdoin wouldn't be
held down for long, as Jessie Small picked up her first goal of the
season at the 10:53 mark. The goal, assisted by Ingrid Oelschlager,
sparked a streak of five unanswered goals from the Polar Bears in
the first half.
Herter recorded two first half goals, while Shavonne Lord and Megan
McCullough eached scored to give Bowdoin a 5-0 advantage at the
break. The Polar Bears racked up 27 shots in the first 35 minutes,
while Sawyer totaled 12 saves in the half. Bowdoin added two more
insurance goals in the second half to set the final to 7-0. Herter
completed her hat trick at the 41 minute mark, off of an assist
from Lord, while McKenna Teagu set up Cathleen Smith on the final
tally of the evening.
In goal for the Blue, Sawyer faced 44 shots while recording 21
saves. For Bowdoin, Emily Neilson got the win, picking up three
saves. Kayla Lessard played the final 10 minutes, saving one shot.
