Amherst Trips Women's Soccer in Opening Contest

BOX SCORE

AMHERST, Mass. - The fifth-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team posted their seventh-straight shutout victory dating back to 2008, blanking Bowdoin by a 3-0 score on Saturday in the season-opener for both teams. The Polar Bears will look to rebound in their home opener on Tuesday against NESCAC rival Bates.

The teams' statistics were virtually identical despite the three-goal disparity. Amherst out-shot Bowdoin by an 18-14 margin and narrowly won the corner kick battle, 5-4. Sophomores Allie Horwitz and Claire Bennett combined for the shutout, with Horwitz making three saves in 67 minutes to earn her 11th career victory. Bennett stopped five shots in 23 minutes, while junior Kat Flaherty made six saves in the losing effort for Bowdoin.

Amherst carried a two-goal lead into intermission thanks to goals from Jackie Hirsch and Kyla Woodhouse. Hirsh added another tally midway through the second period to seal the win.
