AMHERST, Mass. - The fifth-ranked Amherst College women's soccer
team posted their seventh-straight shutout victory dating back to
2008, blanking Bowdoin by a 3-0 score on Saturday in the
season-opener for both teams. The Polar Bears will look to rebound
in their home opener on Tuesday against NESCAC rival Bates.
The teams' statistics were virtually identical despite the
three-goal disparity. Amherst out-shot Bowdoin by an 18-14 margin
and narrowly won the corner kick battle, 5-4. Sophomores Allie
Horwitz and Claire Bennett combined for the shutout, with Horwitz
making three saves in 67 minutes to earn her 11th career victory.
Bennett stopped five shots in 23 minutes, while junior Kat Flaherty
made six saves in the losing effort for Bowdoin.
Amherst carried a two-goal lead into intermission thanks to goals
from Jackie Hirsch and Kyla Woodhouse. Hirsh added another tally
midway through the second period to seal the win.
