WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Tufts University women's tennis team
swept Bowdoin College by a score of 5-0 to eliminate the Polar
Bears from the New England Small College Athletic Conference
tournament at Williams College on Friday afternoon. The
fourth-seeded Jumbos (8-4) advance to play in the conference
semifinals against top-seeded Amherst on Saturday. The fifth-seeded
Polar Bears (8-8) will hope for an at-large bid to the NCAA
Tournament when selections are announced on Monday, May 4.
Bowdoin's top doubles team of Emily Lombardi and Sarah D'Elia put
up a valiant effort against Tufts' duo of Julia Browne and Meghan
McCooey, with the Jumbos taking a narrow 9-7 win. Rachel Waldman
and Charlotte Hitch dropped an 8-5 decision at number two doubles
while Hannah Hoerner and Liz Pedowitz fell by a score of 8-2 at
number three.
Tufts wasted little time sealing the win as Julia Browne swept
Sarah D'Elia 6-1, 6-2 in the top singles spot before Rachel Waldman
suffered a 6-1, 7-5 defeat to Erica Miller at number three singles
to clinch the match.
