BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College softball team defeated
Thomas 9-1 in game one and played to a 5-5 tie called due to
darkness in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at
Pickard Field. The Polar Bears improve to 17-12-1 while the
Terriers stand at 4-11-1.
The Polar Bears mercy-ruled the Terriers in the opener, scoring
six runs in the opening two innings and cruising to victory.
Bowdoin rapped out 14 hits, including four from Clare Ronan and
three from Shavonne Lord. Lord also scored four runs while Ronan
plated twice for the Polar Bears. Ali Coleman had a team-high four
RBI in the game as Julia Jacobs spun six innings of one-run ball
for Bowdoin. Sara Pavento took the loss for Thomas, allowing five
earned runs over four innings.
Bowdoin appeared to be in line to cruise to a win in the second
contest, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a
two-run homer by Coleman. Thomas rallied with three runs in the
fourth inning and tied the game in the fifth frame on an RBI single
by Heather Dupuis. Jordan Kennedy settled in after a rocky first
inning, scattering nine hits while striking out nine for the
Terriers. Michelle Wells pitched four innings for Bowdoin,
permitting four earned runs before giving way to Karen Reni, who
allowed one hit and struck out five.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Wednesday at Southern
Maine.
