WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Bowdoin College baseball team exploded
for 27 runs in a pair of wins against Salve Regina on Monday,
sweeping a twinbill 18-3 and 9-8 over the Seahawks. The Polar Bears
stand at 2-2 overall this season.
Adam Marquit was the hitting star for Bowdoin, going 5-8 with two
triples and three stolen bases on the afternoon. He got things
going for the Polar Bears in game one with an early triple that
aided a six-run first inning outburst. The Polar Bears padded their
lead in the fifth, as consecutive doubles by Brendan Garner and Ben
Higgins increased the lead to 11-3. Marquit added a two-run single
in the sixth and a triple in the seventh to round out the win. Joe
Pace tossed six strong innings in his season debut, allowing three
earned runs while striking out nine.
Game two was a back-and-forth affair that Bowdoin survived thanks
to a four-run third inning. With the bases loaded, Kevin Zikaras
scored on a wild pitch before a two-run single was delivered by Ian
Edwards. Matt Ruane had a pair of doubles and two runs scored while
Zikaras ended with two triples, three runs scored and three rbi.
Bowdoin pieced together their pitching in game two, with Carter
Butland (1.1 innings), Eric Chenelle (1.2), Sean Kleier (0.2)
paving the way for rookie Jordan Edgett (2 IP, 4 ER) to close out
the game with a strikeout for his first career win.
