FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Bowdoin College softball team split a pair
of games on their opening day in Florida, defeating Elms 4-3 (8)
before falling in a close 3-2 decision to Olivet. Shavonne Lord led
the Bowdoin attack, rapping out four hits on the day, including a
pair of triples.
Kara Nilan tossed six strong innings in game one, striking out 11
but walking seven in the game. Bowdoin scored a single run in the
first, when Caroline Dewar came home on a Clare Ronan sac fly, and
in the third when another Ronan sac fly plated Shavonne Lord. Elms
rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh, and scored
another run in the top of the eighth to put Bowdoin on the ropes.
But a two-run bottom of the eighth sealed the win as another Lord
triple scored Dewar and Ali Coleman ripped a sac fly to center for
the game-winning RBI. Julia Jacobs took the victory in relief for
Bowdoin.
Bowdoin fell behind Olivet, 3-0 after four innings of their second
game on Wednesday, but posted a late rally that fell just short.
Lauren Coven singled home Ronan to trim the lead to 3-1 in the
bottom of the fourth. In the sixth, Dewar scored on a double by
Courtney Colantuno that cut it to 3-2. The Polar Bears put the
first two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but a
game-ending double play squandered Bowdoin's chances. Karen Reni
took the loss after going five innings and allowing three earned
runs. Michelle Wells and Julia Jacobs eached pitched an inning of
scoreless relief.
