WATERVILLE, Maine - The sixth-ranked Bowdoin College women's
basketball team never trailed and rode the performances of Leah
Rubega and Katie Bergeron in a 65-56 win over Colby College on
Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium. Bowdoin improves to 5-0 overall,
while Colby falls for the first time and is 4-1. The victory is the
19th-straight for the Polar Bears over the Mules dating back to
2001.
Rubega had game-highs of 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead the
Polar Bears. She shot 9-for-15 from the field and added three
assists and three steals. Bergeron finished with 14 points,
including 7-for-8 free throw shooting, and dished nine of
Bowdoin's 17 assists in the game. Many of her assists came on
penetrations and passes to Rubega for easy inside baskets.
Colby had a 24-12 advantage in points from the bench and received
some solid performances. Kelly Potvin had all nine of her points in
the first half to keep the Mules in the game. Alison Cappelloni had
12 points and eight rebounds to pace Colby. Bowdoin got off to a
quick 6-0 start to the game and opened up leads of 12-3 and 17-6
before the Mules were able to settle down. The Polar Bears had a
32-18 lead before Colby scored the final four points of the half to
trail 32-22 at the break.
Colby was as close as 36-30 with 15:35 left in the game, but
Bowdoin used a 12-3 run to push the margin to 48-33 with 8:56 to
go. The Mules continued to battle and cut the lead to 48-41 with
6:27 left, but Rubega scored on a 3-point play with 6:10 left and
Colby could not closer than nine points the rest of the way.
