BRUNSWICK, Maine - Leah Rubega grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds
as the Bowdoin College women's basketball team jumped out to a 14-0
lead and never looked back in a 60-40 win over Colby-Sawyer on
Thursday evening. The Polar Bears, ranked fifth in the latest
D3Hoops.com national poll, improve to 7-0 this season. The Chargers
slip to 3-5 with the loss.
The Polar Bears scored the first 14 points of the game, as Caitlin
Hynes sparked the run with a hoop-and-harm to get Bowdoin going and
scored six points in the spurt. The Chargers responded with a surge
of their own, trimming the lead to eight points, 20-12, on a Teri
Duffy layup with seven minutes left in the period. But the Polar
Bears dominated the paint, holding a 31-21 edge in rebounding and
notching 18 points in the paint to carry a 28-12 lead into
intermission.
Bowdoin led by as many as 23 points in the second period en route
to victory and finished with a 49-36 edge on the glass.
The teams combined to shoot just 31% from the field for the game
as Katie Bergeron led all players with 14 points for the hosts.
Hynes ended with 11 for Bowdoin while Rubega scored five to go with
her 20 caroms. Rubega's rebound total is the most for a Polar Bear
player in 30 years, tying for the fifth-best mark in a single-game
in program history. Cailin Bullett led Colby-Sawyer with 13 points.
