BRUNSWICK, Maine - Ellery Gould scored 19 points to lead the
Bowdoin College women's basketball team to a 78-51 victory over the
University of New England on Tuesday evening. The seventh-ranked
Polar Bears claim their home opener and improve to 3-0 overall. The
Nor'easters drop to 3-2 this season.
The Polar Bears never trailed in the game, and used a late 10-2
spurt right before halftime to open up a 12-point advantage. Jill
Henrikson opened the run with a three-pointer and Kaitlin Donahoe
closed it with a trifecta to give the hosts a 32-20 edge at the
break.
UNE could get no closer than nine points in the second half, and
Bowdoin - thanks in great part to Gould's sharpshooting - put the
game out of reach. The sophomore scored 14 points in the period,
including three from long-distance, to seal Bowdoin's 15th-straight
win over their neighbors from Biddeford. Bowdoin leads the all-time
series against UNE, 27-3.
Nicole Coombes finished with 10 points off the bench for Bowdoin,
whose bench outscored the Nor'easters' 47-6. Caitlin Hynes also
posted nine points and nine rebounds. Kelly Paradis led UNE with 17
points. Bowdoin held a 49-40 edge in rebounding and shot 47% from
the field for the game. The Polar Bears also assisted on 21 of
their 31 baskets.
