BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's soccer team beat
Trinity for the second time in eight days, collecting a 3-0 win in
the Quarterfinals of the NESCAC Tournament on Saturday. The
fourth-seeded Polar Bears improve to 11-3-1 and will face Williams
in the semifinals next weekend. Trinity's season likely ends with a
record of 10-4-1.
Just over a week since bouncing Trinity, 2-0 in Hartford, Bowdoin
took the lead in the 22nd minute on Sunday. A perfectly-played free
kick by Sean Bishop found the head of Call Nichols, who netted his
second goal of the season to give the hosts a one-goal edge.
Bowdoin carried the lead through halftime into the 52nd minute,
when Bishop booted a loose ball into the corner of the net to give
the Polar Bears a two-goal advantage.
Trinity's best chance to cut into the lead came minutes later,
when Samuel Wisner took a shot in close that Bowdoin netminder Dan
Hicks punched away. The Polar Bears put the game away with under
seven minutes to play when Tim Prior found Nick Powell behind the
Trinity defense. Powell deked Bantam goaltender Grant Schonberg and
tapped it into the net for a three-goal lead.
Hicks made six saves for Bowdoin in 85 minutes of play before
giving way to Garrick Sheldon in the final five. Schonberg stopped
a dozen shots in 85 minutes before being relieved by Nathan
Maggiotto. Bowdoin held a 20-15 edge in shots and 7-1 lead in
penalty corners for the contest.
Next Saturday's contest with Williams will be a rematch of a
phenomenal game on October 17 in Brunswick, won in overtime by the
Ephs 3-2.
