BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Tufts University field hockey team scored
a pair of second-half goals to take a 2-0 victory over Bowdoin in
the regular season finale for both teams on Friday. The
fifth-ranked Jumbos, who already had secured the second seed in the
conference tournament, improve to 13-1 (8-1 NESCAC) while the
12th-ranked Polar Bears dip to 9-5 (4-5 NESCAC) and grabbed the
sixth seed.
Tufts will host Wesleyan in a first-round game on Sunday at 1:00
p.m. while Bowdoin will travel to Amherst for a 1:00 p.m. opening
round game on November 1.
After a scoreless first period, Tufts notched an early tally in
the second period to grab the lead. In transition, Tamara Brown
looked to feed a pass to a teammate on the far post, but a Bowdoin
defender reached to block it, deflecting it past goaltender Emily
Neilson and into the cage for a 1-0 lead. The Jumbos extended their
lead late in the half, when a penalty shot was awarded to Margi
Scholtes. Scholtes deposited a shot inside the left post, tipping
off the pads of Neilson into the net to close out the scoring.
Neilson ended with four saves for Bowdoin while Marianna Zak
stopped one shot in goal for the Jumbos.
