BOX
SCORE
BRUNSWICK, Maine - Joe Vella scored the game-winning goal 7:56
into overtime to lift the Williams College men's soccer team to a
3-2 comeback victory over Bowdoin on Saturday. The win gives the
20th-ranked Ephs a 10-1-1 mark (5-1-1 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears
fall to 7-3-1 (3-3-1 NESCAC) with the defeat.
The game-winning goal came off a free kick just outside the box in
overtime. Vella's shot landed short of the goalline and skipped
into the net to give the Ephs the win in extra time.
It took a Charles Romero goal with less than ten minutes remaining
to force overtime, as Williams trailed the host Polar Bears
following a Tim Prior tally at the 68 minute mark. The pretty goal
was set up by a free kick from Eddie Jones to Prior, who deftly
headed the ball over Williams netminder Than Finan. Romero forced
extra time with a put-back in the 81st minute.
The game was deadlocked at one at halftime thanks to first-half
tallies by Williams' Gaston Kelly and Bowdoin's Hunter Clark. Kelly
stole a ball in the box in the 11th minute and ripped a shot to the
top-right corner. Clark evened the score twenty minutes later when
Prior collected a rebound off the crossbar and fed it to the
first-year, who earned his first career tally.
Hicks made five saves for Bowdoin while Finan finished with one
stop for the Ephs.
