NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Bowdoin College men's soccer team cruised
to a 4-0 win in non-conference action on Monday afternoon. Freshman
Michael Gale scored two goals for Bowdoin, who improve to 7-2-1
overall. Colby-Sawyer falls to 2-11 with the loss.
With the win, the Polar Bears are off to their best start since
2006 when they began the year 10-2-0.
Sophomore Peter Kelley struck first for the Polar Bears in the 17th
minute. He fired a rocket into the corner of the net on a ball from
senior Hugh Fleming who set him up nicely. Bowdoin thought they had
a two goal advantage two minutes later when they were awarded a
penalty kick after a foul occurred in the box. Junior Ben
Denton-Schneider kept Colby-Sawyer keeper Chris Feltes guessing,
but he was up to the task and made the diving save. In the 21st
minute, the Polar Bears did find a second goal when senior Carl
Woock hit a grounder to the right corner of the net past the
goalie. Fleming picked up his second assist of the game.
Bowdoin iced the game mid-way through the second half on a
breakaway goal from Gale. He was not finished, as he scored once
more in the 77th minute to give Bowdoin the 4-0 lead. The defense,
led by senior goalkeeper Garrick Sheldon, held off the attack of
the Chargers the rest of the way. Sheldon finished with four saves
in the victory, while Feltes finished with 10 saves for the
Chargers.
Bowdoin returns to conference action with a home contest against
Williams on Saturday, October 17.
