BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's soccer team
scored three second-half goals to pull away in a 4-0 win over
Bridgewater State College on Saturday afternoon in both team's
season-openers. The Polar Bears (1-0) improve their all-time record
against Bridgewater to 15-0-0 dating back to 1990.
Bowdoin withstood an initial charge from the Bears, as Polar Bear
Kelly Thomas made a nice save off a shot from Christine Soucy just
six minutes into the contest. Midway through the period, a rally up
the middle of the field saw Bowdoin's Katherine Farrar deliver a
high-ball to Emery Gould, who headed the ball into the net to give
the hosts a 1-0 advantage at 26:30.
The Polar Bears carried the lead through halftime and poured it on
in the second stanza. Alex von Gerichten ripped a shot from 20
yards out for a goal at 50:50 to double Bowdoin's lead. Just under
13 minutes later, Dana Riker beat her defender off the dribble and
lofted a shot over Bridgewater State keeper Kayla Grover to
increase the lead to three. First-year Celeste Swain rounded out
the scoring with a goal from the left wing at 77:00.
Thomas made six saves for Bowdoin in the shutout while Grover
stopped nine for Bridgewater State.
