BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin all-time leading scorer Lindsay
McNamara netted a hat trick as the top-ranked Polar Bear field
hockey team defeated Wellesley 4-0 in both team's season opener on
Saturday. The Polar Bears extend the nation's longest home-field
winning streak to 34 straight games.
McNamara wasted little time getting Bowdoin on the board, scoring
off a Kara Kelley feed at 5:36 of the opening half. Bowdoin carried
the one-goal lead through intermission thanks to the strong play of
Wellesley netminder Emily Hewitt, who made nine first-half saves.
Bowdoin added three tallies in the second half to pull away, with
Ingrid Oelschlager's first goal of the season at 47:01 boosting the
lead to two goals. McNamara scored her second and third goals later
in the period to ice the game.
McNamara now has 63 career goals in 59 career games. Bowdoin's
Emileigh Mercer was forced to make no saves as the Polar Bears held
a 29-1 advantage in shots. Hewitt finished with 14 in defeat for
the Blue.
