BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team
claimed the inaugural Coastal Maine Classic on Wednesday evening,
defeating Wheaton College 64-39. In the early game Wednesday,
William Smith knocked off Maine Maritime 89-52.
Bowdoin point guard Maria Noucas was named Tournament MVP, and
was joined on the All-Classic team by teammate Caitlin Hynes, Maine
Maritime's Kelsi Eiane, William Smith's Mollie Danahy and Wheaton's
Krystin Hickey.
Bowdoin's defense dominated the opening half of their victory
over Wheaton as the Polar Bears forced 16 turnovers and held the
Lyons scoreless for the final 7:21 of the period. Up 21-12 midway
through the stanza, Bowdoin closed the half on a 14-0 run led by
Alexa Kaubris, who equaled Wheaton's scoring output with a dozen
first-half points. The Polar Bears stretched their lead to as many
as 30 points in the second half and posted their best defensive
effort of the season by allowing just 39 points and permitting just
34% shooting from the field.
Kaubris finished with 15 points while Ellery Gould ended with 11
and Hynes 10. Noucas scored seven points, grabbed a game-high 10
rebounds and dished out six assists for Bowdoin. For the
tournament, Noucas had 15 assists and just two turnovers. Wheaton
was paced by a game-high 16 points from Hickey. The Polar Bears
out-rebounded the Lyons 45-29 for the game.
Wednesday's early contest saw William Smith force 32 Maine
Maritime turnovers in an 89-52 victory. The Herons soared to a 17
point lead at intermission thanks to 66% shooting from the field in
the opening stanza. Aslinn Barber dominated in the paint, scoring
16 first-half points while Latasha Coney connected on 4-of-5
attempts from beyond the arc to total 16 in the opening period as
well. William Smith scored 37 points off turnovers and were paced
by Coney's 25 for the game. Barber ended with 18 while Erin
Cunningham also saw double figures with 13 for the Herons. The
Mariners were led by 20 points from Tatum Welch off the bench with
Samantha Goda adding 13.
