BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin's Sean Bishop scored the game's only
goal to lead the Polar Bear men's soccer team to a key 1-0 NESCAC
victory over Bates on Sunday afternoon at Pickard Field. The Polar
Bears improve to 3-4-0 (2-3-0 NESCAC) while Bates falls to 4-4-0
(1-4-0 NESCAC).
A scoreless first half saw the Polar Bears control the pace of play
and earn a 9-2 advantage in shots. However, a pair of nifty saves
by Bates netminder Greg Watts kept the game deadlocked headed into
the second period. Midway through the frame, Bowdoin earned an
indirect free kick from 30 yards, and a bouncing ball came to the
head of Bishop. Bishop headed the ball past Watts and into the net
for his second goal of the year at 70:22 to give the Polar Bears
the lead.
Dan Hicks made the lead stand for Bowdoin as he finished with four
saves, including three in the second-half. Watts finished with
three saves overall for the Bobcats. Three yellow cards were dealt
in Sunday's contest, but fouls ended tied at 14 apiece. Bowdoin was
called for 11 offsides violations and finished with an 8-2 lead in
corner kicks.
