SCORE
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The defending national-champion Middlebury
College men's soccer team remained unbeaten this season with a 1-0
victory over Bowdoin on Saturday at Pickard Field. The
fourth-ranked Panthers earn their fourth shutout of the season and
improve to 6-0-1 (3-0-1 NESCAC) this season. Bowdoin falls to 2-4-0
(1-3-0) this year.
After an evenly-played first half that saw the teams attempt five
shots apiece, the Panthers broke through with an early goal in the
second period. Tyler Macnee took control of the ball at midfield,
slashed across the field to the right and cut a shot back across
the grain to the lower left corner, just beyond the reach of
Bowdoin goaltender Dan Hicks.
Bowdoin's best chance to tie the score came with under five
minutes to play. A scramble in front of the net came to the foot of
Eddie Jones, who ripped a shot to the lower left that was punched
wide by a diving Brian Bush, preserving the victory for
Middlebury.
Both Bush and Hicks made three saves in net. The win by Middlebury
on Saturday was the first win for the Panthers in Brunswick since
1995. Bowdoin will return to action on Sunday afternoon with home
match against Bates.
