BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Tufts University women's soccer team scored
a pair of second-half goals to rally past Bowdoin on Friday
afternoon, 2-1. The Jumbos (8-5, 5-4 NESCAC) will now face the
Polar Bears again in two days in the first round of the conference
tournament on Sunday at Kraft Field with a 12:30 pm start time.
Tufts is the #4 seed and Bowdoin (7-4-3, 4-3-2) is fifth.
The Polar Bears got on the scoreboard first when a pass by Ellery
Gould was one-timed by Celeste Swain into the low right corner of
the goal in the 34th minute of play. The contest went to halftime
with Bowdoin holding the 1-0 lead. Tufts had a 7-3 advantage in
shots for the first 45 minutes.
The Jumbos struck quickly to take the lead, beginning 15 minutes
into the second half. Junior Ali Maxwell scored her fifth goal of
the season off a rebound, with Jenna Castellot credited with an
assist. About three minutes later, Castellot beat a Bowdoin
defender for a breakaway shot from just above the 18 that zipped
into the low right corner of the goal.
Tufts sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Jacobs made two of her four
saves late in the game after the Jumbos had taken the lead. Tufts
finished with a 16-6 margin in shots, with Bowdoin's Kelly Thomas
stopping six.
