BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson senior Tim Winn scored the
go-ahead goal just over three minutes into the second half as the
Babson College men's soccer team won a hard-fought contest
with visiting Bowdoin College, 2-1, in non-conference action at
Hartwell-Rogers Field on Sunday afternoon. It was the sixth
straight victory for the Beavers, ranked fourth in New England, as
they improved to 13-4-1, while the Polar Bears dropped to 6-6-0
with the loss.
First-year Max Walker put Babson in front at the 15-minute mark,
as he collected a rebound of his own blocked shot and tucked it
into the lower left corner for a 1-0 advantage. Things stayed that
way until the 34th minute, when Bowdoin sophomore David Schaeffer
hit a perfect through-ball to first-year Eddie Jones, who netted a
wide-open breakaway goal to even the contest at 1-1.
Babson took the lead for good early in the second half, beginning
when junior Sean Gleason hit a cross from deep in the right corner.
First-year Billy Nickerson then headed the ball to the left side of
the box, where Winn picked it up and blasted home his team-leading
12th goal of the season at 48:17.
Bowdoin's best chance the rest of the way came less than
four minutes later, when Jones beat two defenders on the left side
of the box and ripped a shot from 10 yards out. However, his bid
sailed just wide of the left post and the Babson defense managed to
keep the Polar Bears at bay over the final 38 minutes as the home
team secured the 2-1 victory.
First-year goalie Peter Crowley went the distance in net without
making a save for Babson while sophomore Dan Hicks turned away one
shot in goal for Bowdoin. Polar Bears' first-year defenseman
Sean Bishop also added a goal-saving play in defeat when he blocked
a hard shot by Winn on the goal line in the 61st minute.
