WATERVILLE, Maine - The Colby College men's soccer team defeated
Bowdoin Saturday, 3-1, earning their first win over the Polar Bears
since 1996 and snapping an 11-game winless skid against their Maine
rivals. The Mules, now 7-5-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the league, are
2-0-1 in conference play in the last eight days. Bowdoin falls to
6-5 overall and 4-4 in the league.
Colby led 1-0 at halftime after Scott Brown tallied about 30
minutes into the first half. Todd Boertzel had a long throw-in
flicked on by co-captain Tom Milaschewski to Brown, who had a
left-footed strike for the goal.
The Mules made it 2-0 at 52:42 of the second half when Logan King
had a bending direct kick go off the bar and in. Bowdoin bounced
back at 64:55 when Ben Denton-Schneider won a battle in the box
with some Colby defenders and scored off an assist from Eddie
Jones.
The Polar Bears had a defensive miscue on Colby's final goal
at 74:18. First-year forward Josh Lyvers took advantage and went in
on a breakaway for his team-best seventh goal of the season.
Dan Marden had five saves for Colby. Dan Hicks made three stops for
the Polar Bears, who had a 17-11 shot advantage.
