A member of one of collegiate hockey’s most prolific
scoring lines, Joe Gaffney helped establish high-flying records
that are unlikely to be matched in storied history of Bowdoin
hockey. Gaffney’s statistics are mind-boggling: 113 goals and
183 assists in 103 career contests, averaging more than a goal and
an assist per game for his entire career. Along with his brother
Charlie and teammate Marcelo Gentile, Gaffney helped establish a
new Bowdoin team record of 157 goals in their senior campaign of
1994-95, as the team averaged more than six goals per game. Three
times the Polar Bears went to the ECAC Championship game on
Gaffney’s watch as Bowdoin came away with the crown in
1992-93. An ECAC All-Star and team captain, Gaffney still ranks
second all-time at Bowdoin in career points, assists and goals and
his seven-point effort against St. Anselm in 1992 remains the
school standard.
