One of the most successful coaches in school history, John
Cullen led the women’s soccer team to extraordinary heights
during his tenure and, as a beloved member of the Athletic
Department staff, left an indelible mark on a generation of Bowdoin
students. Over 22 seasons as head coach of the Polar Bear
women’s soccer program, Cullen accumulated 238 wins against
85 losses and 24 ties, ranking among the top 15 in Division III
history in both victories and winning percentage. The team made the
postseason each year, winning the NIAC Championship in 1987 as well
as back-to-back ECAC crowns in 1992 and ’93. Seventeen
players were recognized as All-Americans under Cullen’s
leadership and Cullen himself was named New England Coach of the
Year in 1989, ’92 and ’95. In 1995, he received his
sports’ highest honor when he was recognized as the National
Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III National Coach
of the Year. Also a coach for the softball team, he helped steer
the team to the 1992 NESCAC Championship, and also served as a
long-time assistant for the men’s ice hockey program.
Following his retirement in 2007, he was recognized with
“Coach Emeritus” status by the College.
