Hanczor Sets Blocks Record as Bowdoin Sweeps Saturday Matches

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's volleyball team concluded a successful first weekend of play with a pair of victories Saturday at the Endicott Invitational. The Polar Bears earned a 3-0 win over Plymouth State and rallied for a 3-2 victory against St. Mary's (Minn.) to improve to 3-1 this fall.

The Polar Bears finished 3-1 at the tournament and Kristin Hanczor was named to the All-Tournament team thanks to 3.13 kills/set and 15 total blocks, including a school record 12 total blocks in the win over St. Mary's. She finished the weekend with a .481 hitting percentage.

A balanced attack helped the Polar Bears against Plymouth (25-18, 25-16, 25-10). Melissa Haskell (eight kills), Ellie Brennan (seven kills) and Hanczor (seven kills) led the way offensively with Sophia Cornew dishing out 34 assists. Cornew and Jillian Berkman had 11 digs apiece.

Bowdoin's defense stepped up in the win over St. Mary's (25-21, 23-25, 18-25, 25-19, 19-17) as Hanczor set a new school record with 12 total blocks (five solo, seven assists) as the Polar Bears racked up seven solo and 22 assists as a team. Four players had double-digits in digs, led by 25 from Taylor Vail. Cornew totaled 47 assists, feeding Hanczor (17 kills) and Haskell (16 kills) in the win.

The Polar Bears will return to action at the University of New England on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
