First-Year Sophia Slovenski Earns All-American Honors at NCAA Championship

GENEVA, Ohio - Bowdoin first-year Sophia Slovenski (Cape Neddick, Maine) earned All-American honors, placing third in the javelin at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships Thursday in Ohio.

Slovenski, who was seeded 10th in the nation based on her throw of 43.24m at the season-opening Hurricane Invitational in Miami, threw a distance of 41.69m in qualifying to advance to the finals in third place. After dropping to sixth place in the finals, she tossed a personal-best 44.13m in her sixth and final throw to place third overall. 

Bowdoin's other NCAA qualifier, junior Caroline Shipley, just missed out on qualifying for the 1500M finals. Shipley led her heat from the 200-800 meter mark and was in sixth place enter the final 400. She ended in 14th place overall in 4:42.22, just missing the finals by two positions. Shipley is a two-time All-American, including the runner of the lead leg of Bowdoin's 2017 Women's DMR national championship team.
