BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's and women's tennis teams have qualified for the 2006 NESCAC Tennis Championship this weekend at Williams College. Both teams are seeded fourth in their respective six-team fields and will play in the first-round of the tournament on Friday, April 28.
The Bowdoin women will take on Tufts University on Friday at 9:00 a.m. in the first-round of the championship. The Polar Bears (7-8 overall) closed out their regular season with an 8-1 win over Colby College last weekend.. Bowdoin is 7-5 against Division III competition, and are led by Sarah D'Elia (14-10) and Kristen Raymond (14-8). The duo are tied for the team lead in match victories, playing the majority of their matches at the number one and two positions, respectively. Sarah D'Elia and Kelsey Hughes have teamed up at the top doubles position this year for Bowdoin, and have posted a 9-6 mark. Bowdoin faced Tufts during the fall season, posting a 6-3 win on October 1 in Medford, Mass.
The Polar Bear men will begin their run in the NESCAC Tournament against Amherst College on Friday at 1:00 p.m. The men's team closed the regular season with four straight victories and finished with a 7-5 mark against Division III teams (7-9 overall). Sam Bitetti has posted a 6-3 mark at the number one position for the Polar Bears (9-5 overall), while Garrett Gates has a 7-2 record at the number two spot in the ladder (9-10 overall). Alex White has posted the most wins on the squad this year, racking up a 12-7 record, playing mostly at the number three position. Bitetti and Gates are Bowdoin's top doubles team with a 9-5 record this year. Bowdoin defeated Amherst in a thrilling 4-3 decision on April 1 in Brunswick.
