Polar Bears Close Winter Break by Winning Four of Five

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's squash team won four of their last five matches during winter break and enter the spring semester with an overall record of 5-7. The Polar Bears opened 2009 by falling in three straight matches, but rebounded well at Yale last weekend.

Bowdoin dropped 9-0 decisions to national powers Cornell, Stanford and Yale in New Haven on January 10-11, but were able to bounce back the following week. The Polar Bears won both matched on Friday, January 16, defeating Vassar 7-2 and Middlebury 6-3. Saturday, Bowdoin beat Hamilton and lost to Mt. Holyoke. Sunday, the team was able to edge Amherst 6-3 before their afternoon match against Trinity was canceled due to weather.

Alex Franchesci and Elizabeth Warner enjoyed exceptional weekends, going unbeaten in the five matches. Franchesci was featured at the number four singles position while Warner anchored the number six spot. Number one player Elena Laird was 4-1 overall on the weekend, as were Lauren Gesswein (#2), Kate Gormley (#3) and Elizabeth Gillespie (#5).

Bowdoin will look to continue their winning ways this Saturday when they play at Brown. Next Tuesday night, the Polar Bears will travel to Bates before going to Trinity for the NESCAC Championships (Jan. 31-Feb. 1).
