Gould Sets Bowdoin Career Goals Record as Polar Bears Cruise at Farmington

FARMINGTON, Maine - Ellery Gould scored 2:37 into the second half, sparking a five-goal surge and setting a new school record for career goals, as the Bowdoin College women's soccer team cruised to a 7-1 win at the University of Maine-Farmington on Tuesday.

Gould's marker upped her career tally to 39, breaking the 27-year-old record held by Marte Holden '85. Casey Blossom, Carolyn Gorajek, Becky Krakora, Caroline Logan, Molly Popolizio and Alexa Yurick also each netted a goal for the Polar Bears.

Bowdoin outshot the Beavers 31-6 in the match, but struggled to shake the hosts in the opening half. Gorajek blasted in a rebound at 14:48 to give the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead, but UMF's Alida Peake tied the game at 1-1 less than six minutes later. Bowdoin keeper Louise Johnson beat Peake to her dribble with a dive, but the ball skipped away and Peake punched it in for the tying score.

UMF keeper Beth Lebel made a leaping attempt on a misplayed ball to save an own goal and snubbed Gould with a diving save to keep the match at 1-1 for the next 20 minutes. Krakora took advantage of a turnover in the UMF backfield to beat Lebel at 41:02 to give Bowdoin a 2-1 lead at intermission.

Gould's record-breaker just after intermission came off a midfield feed from Becky Stoneman. Gould took a stride and fired the ball in for the score and a 3-1 Bowdoin lead.

Blossom and Popolizio expanded the lead to 5-1 at 61:55 with Logan adding a penalty kick and a Yurick header finishing off the scoring for a 7-1 win for the Polar Bears.

Lebel finished with eight saves for the Beavers. Johnson and Maddie Lane split netminding duties. Lane recorded two saves in the second half.

Bowdoin (3-3-2) is slated to host Colby College Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in New England Small College Athletic Conference action.
