AMHERST, Mass. - It was a tale of two matches for the Bowdoin
women's rugby team at the Beantown Preseason Tournament hosted by
UMass-Amherst on Saturday. The Polar Bears defeated Williams in
their opener, 53-3 before falling to Vermont 34-0 in the second
game of the doubleheader. The Polar Bears will conclude play at the
tournament on Sunday.
Rebecca Stevens led the way against the Ephs, capturing two tries and three conversions to pace the scoring. Rebecca Silva, Loryn Fridie and Zara Bowden added first-half tries for the Polar Bears before Helen White, Carolyn Levin, Danielle McAvoy and Kenzie Novak also added second period scores to round out the win.
Bowdoin struggled to get possession against UVM, leading to the shutout defeat. Bowdoin surrendered six tries and two conversions in the 34-0 setback.
In their final match of the weekend on Sunday, Bowdoin lost a tough-fought battle to MIT, 7-5. The Engineers scored and converted a try in the opening half and held off a late rally by the Polar Bears. Kerry Townsend scored Bowdoin's lone try in the second period. Strong defensive efforts were seen throughout the game, especially from Becky Stevens, Allie Dupont, Lena Midney, Dorothy Pei and Kenzie Novak.
Bowdoin opens the New England Rugby Union season with a league match against Northeastern U. on Saturday, Sept. 18th at 3:00pm in Boston.
