BRUNSWICK, Maine – Kayte Holtz scored her second hat trick in as many days and Sage Santangelo made 32 saves in a 8-2 Bowdoin victory against Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon. With their second straight win over the Pioneers, the Polar Bears improve to 11-5-2 while Sacred Heart falls to 7-17-0 overall this season.
Bowdoin got on the board first with a goal at 4:25 as Al Chlebeck redirected a shot by Madeleine Lane to give the hosts a one-goal lead. Kayte Holtz added a pair of goals to her weekend tally to give Bowdoin a 3-0 advantage. At 12:52, she circled the net and scored her fifth goal of the weekend before tapping a backhander past Pioneer goaltender Alexius Schutt at 16:09. Sacred Heart cut into the lead when Jamie Mey dug the puck out of the corner and fed Tara Kent in front for a score with just 43 seconds left in the period.
Bowdoin increased their lead late in the second period when Holtz found Jill Campbell with perfectly-placed feed on a 2-on-1 break to push the Polar Bear lead back to three goals. Dominique Lozzi fed Emily Tang for a backhander in front of the net on the power play to open the third period before Mey's second goal made it 5-2 with 15:49 remaining. Holtz completed her second hat trick in as many days with a top-shelf wrister at 9:10 before Kim Tess-Wanat and Katie Riley closed out the scoring. Riley's goal with 21 seconds remaining was the first of her collegiate career.
Santangelo made 12 saves in the opening period and 13 in the third to finish with 32 for the game. Schutt made 27 saves and allowed six goals before being replaced by Raelene Sydor, who stopped six shots and allowed two goals over the final 9:37.
Bowdoin will return to the ice next Friday and Saturday at home against nationally-ranked Amherst for a pair of important NESCAC conference games. The puck drops at 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening.
